A rare fumble for Apple as they drop the ball on new iPhone release

To thwart those who unlock their iPhone rather than activating it with AT&T, Apple is requiring new 3G iPhones to be activated in the store. This lengthy process has slowed the entire system to a crawl forcing eveyone in line to wait for hours for the opportunity to purchase one of the devices.

Here are a couple of sample comments from a wired.com article about the debaucle:

[It] Sucks that they back-tracked on the pricing/selling experience and it blew up in their faces. Maybe next year they'll switch back to the old, customer-service-first way that actually works.

Upgraded my 1st gen. iPhone through Itunes @ 8:30am PST this morning and still getting the Itunes network error! I have retried at least 50+ times already! THIS SUCKS! I am dead in the water I now have a bricked iPhone! Thanks Apple. This is my only phone (personal and business). I better get something really good from APPLE FOR FREE because of this! I basically lost a 1/2 day of productivity so far! most likely my whole friday at the rate this is going! My only voice backup is skype! It works but I can't leave my home to make calls! Thank you Skype!
